Schoph – Sanctuary Exhibition

Schoph. Photo Redhouse

Much beloved artist Schoph currently has a new exhibition entitled “Sanctuary” at RedHouse, his Yorkshire based gallery. Combining his “visual poetry” with the spirit of snowboarding, the collection captures creativity in motion. It is running until the 24th December, RedHouse Gallery, 15 Cheltenham Mount, Harrogate HG1 1DW UK

Island Snowboards, Schoph Supernaut

Brand new paintings direct from the studio include, ‘And Relax’, ‘Horse I’ and the ‘English Rose’ series, which fuse Schoph’s abstract gestural mark-making with figurative elements, presenting his distinctive imagery from a new perspective. Sanctuary also offers a rare opportunity to view large-scale abstract canvases from ‘The Quarantine Paintings’ series alongside a collaboration hand-crafted by Island Snowboards (Hokkaido, Japan). Sanctuary marks the debut of Schoph’s abstract paintings on a snowboard deck. It is also the first time the deck will be exhibited in a gallery alongside the canvases that inspired its design.

ISLAND SNOWBOARDS X SCHOPH:Schoph is undoubtedly a dynamic force in the world of snowboarding and art. A true shredder to his core and a legend in the game. His connection with Island Snowboards dates back over 20 years to the Dragon Lodge and Tignes where he spent his winters riding and painting. The Dragon Lodge, a hub for the local snowboard community, was the first place to publicly display Schoph’s paintings...he's part of the family and remains their resident artist to this day with original work, prints and wood-cut pieces adorning every room. The Island 'Supernaut' deck is their “almost twin” powder freestyle model, designed with input from team riders including Dragon Lodge’s own Will Hughes. Knowing it was named after his favourite Black Sabbath song, it was a no brainer to get the mighty Schoph to put his mark on it. Schoph’s work spans a wide spectrum of styles. His multi coloured, darkly themed, layered resin pieces and striking black line images are well known in the snowboard world from his long running work with Lib Tech as well as collaborations with the likes of Vans, Volcom and recently his collaboration with Jamie Lynn on their own brand 1910.Schoph took inspiration from his “Quarantine” series paintings and created the Supernaut graphic, adding new hand-drawn, almost subliminal text, song lyrics, board details and logo - until now, his abstract work has only ever been displayed at his UK gallery Redhouse...never on a snowboardThe SUPERNAUT X SCHOPH models will be available in Japan for winter 2024/2025 in strictly limited numbers, and Europe in 2025. Each one hand made, it’s only fitting that one of each size - a 154 and 159 - will be displayed at Redhouse and for sale alongside some of the “Quarantine” series originals and new work to close the circle.

ISLAND SNOWBOARDS: Island Snowboards is the brainchild of founder Owain Bassett. After years spending his winters snowboarding in the French Alps, during which he setup the legendary Dragon Lodge with his brother John in 1997, he spread his wings in search of new challenges and mountains to ride. He discoveredthe powder snow mecca around Niseko on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido and settled there, working as a mountain guide, built his own house in the woods and raised a family. Making his own boards was always on his mind, so after years of research into the craft, construction and materials he built his own press and started making and testing prototypes in a shipping container workshop in the woods - the idea always to handmake premium boards that rivalled and bettered those from the factories of the big manufacturers.
The first model, the “VOLUME ONE”, was a great success, shaped and handmade by Owain with artwork hand screened by him and his wife Monzen, and Island was born 5 years ago. The idea was always to handmake premium boards, use local wood and premium materials, work with craftsmen, designers and artists locally and from their extended community. Owain teamed up with partner, friend and long-time Niseko local Stu Cady to grow and build the brand slowly and sustainably, never compromising on integrity. Three years ago they renovated an old pig shed at the foot of Mt. Yotei and with the help of local craftsmen, carpenters and friends created the Island Workshop where they now have space to prepare and hand make all the wood cores, press and finish the boards alongside a studio where they work on board designs and artwork, and a showroom where visitors can see the boards and how they are made. Island are growing organically - they currently have three models with the all mountain VOLUME ONE being followed by the deep powder ripper the DEEP PSYCH and most recently the multi-directional powder freestyle model the SUPERNAUT. Each board is made by hand, limited to around 60 - 120 per model each season, mostly available locally in Japan, with very limited numbers in the UK and Europe
